What we wish every family knew about picky eating, growth charts, and feeding therapy

Feeding challenges can feel isolating, especially when well-meaning advice makes you second-guess your instincts. At Beyond Function LLC, we work with families every week who’ve been told to “just wait it out” or “they’ll eat when they’re hungry.” But feeding isn’t just about hunger, it’s about comfort, regulation, and trust.

Here are 5 common misconceptions that leave parents dealing with feeding challenges on their own, and what we want you to know instead.

1️⃣ “They’ll eat when they’re hungry.”

This one sounds reassuring, but it’s not always true.

Kids with sensory sensitivities, oral motor challenges, or anxiety around food may not eat even when they’re hungry. Hunger doesn’t override fear or discomfort.

What helps: Offering safe foods, reducing pressure, and building trust through feeding therapy.

2️⃣ “If they’re growing fine, there’s no problem.”

Growth charts don’t tell the whole story.

We see kids with “healthy” weight who eat fewer than 10 foods, avoid entire textures, or melt down at mealtimes.

What helps: Looking at variety, volume, and emotional stress, not just BMI.

3️⃣ “Picky eating is just a phase.”

Yes, many toddlers go through picky phases. But if it’s intense, long-lasting, or affecting family life, it might be more than a phase.

What helps: Early support. Feeding therapy can prevent long-term stress and expand your child’s comfort zone.

4️⃣ “You just need to be firm and stop offering alternatives.”

This advice often backfires. For kids with feeding challenges, removing safe foods can increase anxiety and reduce intake.

What helps: Keeping safe foods available while gently introducing new ones, without pressure or bribes.

5️⃣ “Therapy happens in the clinic.”

Weekly sessions help, but progress depends on what happens at home.

What helps: Parent coaching, home routines, and small daily wins. Feeding therapy is a team effort.

If you’ve been navigating feeding stress alone, you’re not failing—you’re just missing support.

We’re here to help decode what’s going on and build a plan that fits your child and your family.
