We had such a great time during our summer photo shoot here in Olathe, capturing moments of kids doing the “work” of childhood: play. Behind every smile, climb, or giggle, there’s an incredible amount of skill-building happening in our pediatric therapy sessions.
Here’s a look at four key areas we focused on this summer, and how they came to life in real therapy moments.
1. Fine and Gross Motor Skills
Crawling through a tunnel looks like simple fun, but it’s building strength, coordination, and motor planning all at once. These movements help kids in Olathe and Kansas City with everyday activities like sitting at a desk, climbing stairs, or opening a lunchbox.
2. Reflex Integration
This “ball” position supports the integration of retained reflexes, automatic movements babies are born with that should fade as they grow. When reflexes stick around, they can make tasks like handwriting, balance, and self-regulation harder. Activities like this help the brain and body work together more smoothly.
3. Executive Function
Swinging! It is an amazing sensory regulation tool that also supports focus, attention, and problem-solving. Learning to match their movement to their body’s needs helps kids plan, adapt, and participate more fully in everyday life.
4. Core Strength and Postural Control
Climbing requires strength, stability, and endurance. A strong core supports balance, handwriting, and even reading posture. It’s the foundation for so many skills, both in and out of school, and something we intentionally build during sessions.
In therapy, play is never “just play.” At our Olathe, Kansas practice, it’s an intentional, joyful way to help kids build the skills they need for independence, confidence, and everyday success, both at home and in the community.
